Uplifted hands, palms up.

Since the election last year, Evangelical and Charismatic churches in America have breathed out a common sigh of relief. It looks like the First Amendment will remain intact. In spite of that, we need to form a common church. Here are the reasons why:

The culture war has not ended. We remain targets in that war and there is no quick escape or easy fix to the evil we face. The conflict ahead of us will be long and troubled and we will often see a depth to the evil in certain issues that others choose not to. While we should applaud our vanguard of heroes, we will also need the strength of our numbers to stand firm in our beliefs.

A nation deeply split on many issues has noted that we would often divide on matters of doctrine. It is vital that we now show that the Bible can also unite. This is no easy task, but it would show our critics that our diverse beliefs and backgrounds can still produce a common purpose.

It would allow us to better pool our good ideas on how best to respond to the needs of our changing culture. Rebuilding the nation on Christian values should be one of those ideas.

It would show those who oppose us, the deep honor we have for scripture. If scripture is clear that something is right or wrong, there is no further room for debate, although there is always a place for compassion.

It would allow us to speak out as one voice against any attempt to restrain our speech in the public square.

If those with whom we do not agree are able to silence us, they will not stop with us. So for our own good and the good of others, an attack on one of us must be seen as an attack on all.

It would place us on one clear side in the culture wars, a side that with time, will be proven right.

It would help us to do what Jesus told us to do, to create a church that is one (John 17:21), that rules itself well, and is more worthy of Him than what we have offered Him in the past.
